Thanjavur is an important centre of South Indian religion, art, and architecture. Most of the Great Living Chola Temples, which are UNESCO World Heritage Monuments, are located in and around Thanjavur. The foremost among these, the Brihadeeswara Temple, is located in the centre of the city. Thanjavur is also home to Tanjore painting, a painting style unique to the region.
Brihadeeswara Temple
Brihadishwara Temple (originally known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil) locally known as Thanjai Periya Kovil, and also called Rajarajeswaram, is a Shaivite temple dedicated to Shiva located in South bank of Cauvery river in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India.The original monuments of this 11th-century temple were built around a moat. It included gopura, the main temple, its massive tower, inscriptions, frescoes, and sculptures predominantly related to Shaivism, but also of Vaishnavism and Shaktism traditions of Hinduism. The temple was damaged in its history and some artwork is now missing. Additional mandapam and monuments were added in the centuries that followed. The temple now stands amidst fortified walls that were added after the 16th century.
Saraswathi Mahal Library
Saraswathi Mahal Library, also called Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji’s Sarasvati Mahal Library is library a located in Thanjavur (Tanjore), Tamil Nadu, India It is one of the oldest libraries in Asia established during the 16th century by Nayakas of Thanjavur and has on display a rare collection of Palm leaf manuscripts and paper written in Tamil and sanskrit and a few other languages indigenous to India. The collection comprises well over 49,000 volumes, though only a tiny fraction of these are on display. The library has a complete catalogue of holdings, which is being made available online. Some rare holdings can be viewed on site by prior arrangement..Encyclopaedia Britannica mentions the library as the “Most remarkable library of India
Tanjore maratha Palace
The Thanjavur Maratha Palace Complex, known locally as Aranmanai, today is the of the official residence Bhonsle family that ruled Tanjore from 1674 to 1855.The Thanjavur Maratha palace was originally constructed by the rulers of Tanjore Thanjavur Nayak kingdom After the fall of the Thanjavur Nayak kingdom, it served as the official residence of theThanjavur Marathas. . When most of the Thanjavur Maratha kingdom was annexed by the British Empire in 1799, the Thanjavur Marathas continued to hold sway over the palace and the surrounding fort. The Bhonsle family continued to hold on to the palace even after the last king,Shivaji of Thanjavur.
Punnainallur Sree Maha Mariamman
The PunnaiNallur Mariamman temple is a Hindutemple located at Thanjavur in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple of goddess Mariamman is one of the famous temples around Thanjavur District. The temple is located in the outskirts of Thanjavur.In the year 1680, when the Maharashtra king Venkoji Maharaja Chatrapati (1676–1688) of Tanjore was on a pilgrimage at Samayapuram, where there is a famous temple dedicated to Kali, Mariamman appeared to the King in his dream and told him -that she (the idol) was in a forest of Punna trees at a distance of about 3 miles from Tanjore. The King lost no time in rushing to the spot indicated to him and recovered the idol from the jungle.
